If you’re searching for “organic Christmas tree farms near me,” you might have trouble finding what you’re looking for. There aren’t a ton of US-based Christmas tree farms that grow their trees using sustainable and organic practices.

But we’ve researched a LOT of farms and put together this list of organic Christmas tree farms by state, in hopes of helping you find one near you!

What is the healthiest and most eco-friendly Christmas tree option?

You may already have your mind made up about whether you want to get a real tree or an artificial tree this year.

Most people have a personal preference, but the truth is that there are pros and cons to both options.

Most artificial Christmas trees are made out of toxic PVC and contain added flame retardants. But they can be used year after year, preventing the need for actual trees to be cut down.

Real trees are a more natural option, of course, but they can bring mold, allergens, and pesticide residue into the home. And they can be grown in unsustainable ways when it comes to things like soil health and pest management.

You can read more about the pros and cons to consider (along with the “best” options for artificial trees) in our separate guide on non-toxic Christmas trees. (There are some fun tree-alternative ideas there, too!)

At the end of the day, you have to weigh all the options and make the best decision for you and your family.

But if you do decide to go with a real Christmas tree, then you may prefer to get it from a tree farm that does things as sustainably and organically as possible… And that’s why we put together this guide.

What is an organic Christmas tree?

What exactly makes a Christmas tree “organic,” anyway?

In general, an organic Christmas tree farm is one that does not use toxic pesticides and herbicides for their growing practices.

Instead, they use more natural, integrated management methods to control pests and weeds. These growing methods encourage healthy tree growth, foster healthy soil, and protect the biodiversity of local ecosystems.

Should your Christmas tree have a third-party organic certification?

You’ll notice that many of the farms below use organic growing methods but do not come with third-party certifications (such as USDA Organic, for example).

There are a few reasons for this, but the main one is simply that it can actually be quite costly for a farm to become certified organic and then renew that certification each year. Many small farms simply opt out of the third-party organic certification and choose to spend that money elsewhere, like investing in their employees, farm equipment, local conservation efforts, etc.

Below we’ve indicated which farms do have a third-party certification and which ones simply grow their organic Christmas trees without pesticides or other harsh chemicals.

There are also some farms that are mostly organic, without being 100%. For example, a farm may not spray any pesticides over their entire field, but they may use minimal amounts of pesticides on individual trees when it’s truly necessary.

Regardless, don’t hesitate to reach out to the farm near you and ask them for more information about their practices, the chemicals they do (or don’t) use, other sustainability initiatives, and any other questions you may have.
