If you’re still on the fence about whether or not you actually want a mattress topper and what the potential benefits are, here are some questions that might help you figure it out:
- Do you currently have an old mattress? 👉 If you have an older mattress but can’t afford a new one yet, a mattress topper can help extend the mattress’s life, providing you with adequate comfort for a few more years.
- Do you currently have a conventional mattress? 👉 If you have a conventional mattress like memory foam, you may want to put an organic topper on it to reduce your exposure to things like formaldehyde, phthalates, and VOCs while you sleep.
- Do you need extra support? 👉 This is one of the biggest benefits of a mattress topper: it can help relieve pressure points, give your bed a more plush feel, or change the level of firmness you experience as you sleep.

How to Choose the Right Topper for You
Choosing a natural mattress topper mostly comes down to feel, firmness, sensitivities, and values. Here are the main things to think about when deciding between latex, wool, and down:
Do you want a more bouncy or pillowy feel?
- Latex has a buoyant, slightly springy feel. It’s responsive and supportive, which makes it easier to move around without sinking in too much.
- Wool feels cushy and soft but not overly “sink-in” like memory foam. It’s more about gentle cushioning than bounce.
- Down is the most pillowy and cloud-like of the three. It’s great if you want maximum plushness.
How firm do you want your topper to be?
- Latex can range from soft to firm. A firmer latex topper can make a too-soft mattress more supportive, while a softer one can add cushion.
- Wool is more medium-firm overall. It adds comfort and pressure relief, but it won’t dramatically change the firmness of your bed.
- Down is always soft—it won’t add firmness. If your mattress is already too soft, down won’t help with that.

- Wool and down are both animal-derived, so they’re not vegan-friendly. (Wool is sometimes chosen by people who are okay with animal products if they’re humanely sourced, but that’s a personal decision.)
Do you sleep hot or cold?
- As mentioned above, latex is cooler than memory foam, but not as adaptive as wool.
- Wool is the best at regulating temperature year-round (cool in summer, warm in winter).

If you want extra protection from things like spills, bed-wetting, mold, or critters 👉 Go with a pad protector.

Or, if you want or need both, then get both! If you get the correct size, your mattress protector should be able to go over both your mattress and your topper.
The Best Non-Toxic & Organic Mattress Toppers
Most conventional mattress toppers are made from polyurethane foam or memory foam, which can off-gas VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that contribute to poor indoor air quality. By contrast, natural and organic materials—like latex, wool, and down—are:
- Usually free from harmful chemical treatments.
- Naturally breathable and generally better at regulating temperature.
- Can be more durable and supportive over time.
- Often biodegradable and more eco-friendly overall.

Savvy Rest

My bed is from Savvy Rest and I’m obsessed with it. (Here are my full reviews on the mattress and bed frame I have.)
In terms of natural bed toppers specifically, they’ve got four options:
- Harmony: This one includes three inches of natural latex inside Savvy Rest’s organic casing. It comes with a zipper, so it’s meant to be firmly attached to the top of a Savvy Rest mattress. (See the second photo above.) This is their most customizable one: you can choose between:
- Talalay or Dunlop latex
- Soft, Medium, or Firm
- Whether or not the latex layers are individually wrapped in organic cotton. (This basically makes assembly a bit easier and offers extra protection if you have a latex sensitivity.)
- Vitality: This one is a soft, natural Talalay latex topper in an organic cotton casing. It can be placed on any existing mattress. Think of it as a “memory foam-style” topper. It’s not customizable the way the Harmony is.
- Organic Savvy Woolsy: This one is made of organic wool instead of latex, so it’s more of a ‘pillow-style’ option, compared to the previous two. (See the first photo above.) It features a tack-and-jump quilt pattern and corner straps for a secure fit onto any existing mattress.
- Natural Savvy Woolsy: This is their most affordable option. The overall style is very similar to the Organic Savvy Woolsy, but this one is not certified organic. The all-natural wool IS sourced from the United States, though, and the casing is made of organic cotton fabric. So it’s still a really great option, especially at the lower price point.

Naturepedic is an organic mattress company that truly knows how to do it right.
They have the most options available of any other brand on this list. Here are their options:
- Adagio: This is a 2-inch organic latex topper that has a smooth plush feel, while relieving pressure points.
- Wooly: This is a 3-inch organic wool mattress topper. They describe it as “like sleeping on a cloud blanket.”
- Alpaca: This is another pillow-style topper that features an organic cotton fabric casing stuffed with ethically-sourced alpaca wool from the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains! They source it directly from a small array of Peruvian suppliers. This would be a good option for you if you want wool but tend to be sensitive to it. (Alpaca wool is considered to be more hypoallergenic than other types of wool because it contains minimal levels of lanolin.)
- Box-Stitched Organic Latex: This is one of the ONLY latex toppers that comes in the tack-and-jump style rather than the smooth, rectangle style. It’s made of shredded latex fill instead of a solid piece of latex. And of course, it’s wrapped in organic cotton percale fabric.
- Featherbed: This is the most cloud-like mattress topper on this list. The inside is made of a blend of feathers and down, and then it’s wrapped in soft organic cotton.

I’m sure you know about Avocado—it’s a fan-favorite in the world of organic mattresses.
- Eco Organic Latex: This is one of the most customizable mattress toppers on this list (in addition to the Savvy Rest Harmony). You can choose between:
- 2-inch or 3-inch (they recommend 3 inches for side sleepers)
- GOTS certified organic Dunlop or natural Talalay latex (the Talalay is softer and more buoyant).
- Alpaca Wool: This is their more pillow-y version, made with an organic cotton fabric casing that’s stuffed with 100% natural alpaca wool.
Avocado’s toppers (and other bedroom products) come with several third-party certifications, including GOTS, GOLS, FSC, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD, OEKO-TEX, and more.
Review from a Filtery reader: I couldn’t afford a whole new mattress, but I wanted something to make my bed more comfortable. Coyuchi
Types: Washable Wool Filled Mattress Topper and Climate Beneficial™ Wool Mattress Topper

This is a great option if you want something you can throw in the washing machine. Their Washable Wool Filled Mattress fill is made of 85% NATIVA™ wool from Uruguay and 15% plant-based batting. I reached out to Coyuchi to find out what exactly that ‘plant-based batting’ is made of and they told me it’s a corn-based PLA. The outer fabric is made of organic cotton sateen.
This is definitely one of the thinnest toppers on this list, coming in at around 1/4″-3/8″ thick. (Honestly, I think that’s probably the only way they can make it machine-washable…)
They do have a 100% wool option, which is filled with Climate Beneficial certified wool sourced from a ranch in Bodega Bay and then milled at a historic woolen mill in Michigan. (Unfortunately, it’s sold out at the time of publication, but hopefully they will bring it back!)
But Wait—There’s More!
Honestly, even though the above brands would be my top choice, there’s no shortage of non-toxic and high-quality mattress toppers. Here are some more brands that would be a great choice as well:
Boll & Branch: They have three mattress toppers available, but only one of them is made of all-natural materials: The Cloud Cover Featherbed. It’s a super-plush, cloud-like topper made of four inches of RDS-certified white down filling and an OCS certified cotton shell. Starts at $469.
Eco Terra: Here’s another brand that offers a couple of options, including a natural wool topper as well as a natural latex mattress topper. Zero synthetics and multiple third-party certifications. They also offer 5 Year Warranty and free shipping, depending on your location.
Earthfoam: The new kid on the block! This mattress company was founded in 2022 and offers a minimalistic latex mattress, topper, and pillow. Their topper combines natural rubber from organic farmers in Sri Lanka, organic wool from New Zealand sheep, and soft organic cotton for the outer casing. They’re assembled in their factory in Niles, Illinois. They also offer free shipping to the lower 48, a 100-night sleep trial, and 5-year warranty. Starts at $349.
Essentia: They have two options. Their DormIQ Organic Foam Mattress Topper is very similar to the other organic latex toppers suggested above. Their Zero Gravity Organic Latex EMF Mattress Pad Topper adds an extra layer of EMF protection. Starts at $549.
Holy Lamb Organics: They have several different options. They have two different wool quilted toppers (a certified organic one and a more affordable all-natural one), two different latex/wool ones (also a certified organic option and a cheaper all-natural one), and they also have a certified organic crib mattress topper. They are all made by hand in the USA by a small business.
PlushBeds: I can’t recommend all of PlushBeds’ toppers (they have a memory foam one, a cooling gel one, and a down alternative one, all of which are made of synthetics), but they do have two natural options. The Organic Latex Mattress Topper is free from all synthetics, comes with multiple third-party certifications, and is very customizable—you can choose the thickness (2 or 3 inches), the firmness (Soft, Med, or Med-Firm), and whether or not you want an organic cotton cover. The Natural Wool Mattress Topper is the more pillowy option that’s made of three inches of ethically sourced, natural virgin wool that’s not chemically treated.
Turmerry: This was actually one of the only options I could find that carries an extra-firm organic latex mattress topper. (They also have Soft, Medium, and Firm options.) It’s made completely of organic Dunlop latex and comes with GOLS, OEKO-TEX, and eco-INSTITUT certifications. It also comes with a 120 Night Trial, free shipping, and a 5-year warranty (details apply, of course!). Please note: A Filtery reader says she did not have a positive experience with Turmerry’s customer service several years ago. The main reason I’m including them on this list is because they are the only brand I’ve been able to find so far that offers a 100% natural topper in extra firm.
