We put lotion on to take care of our skin, so then it’s kind of ironic when those moisturizers contain harmful ingredients like hormone-disrupting parabens.

Not to mention the fact that petrolatum (which is one of the main ingredients used in many conventional lotions) is a petroleum-derived product that does not actually absorb into your skin. It creates a barrier on the top of your skin that can help prevent your skin from losing water, but it doesn’t actually help to nourish skin.

The non-toxic lotion brands below, however, use natural ingredients like shea butter, aloe, vitamin E, and others. These can deeply moisturize and deliver nutrients, antioxidants, and more to dry, sensitive, and/or aging skin.

During the winter months, I put lotion on every single day. So, I’ve tried a lot of clean lotions, butters, oils, & more.

I hope my reviews will help you find the best option for you. I’ve got choices for adults & babies, scented & fragrance-free, plastic-free, and more.

My top picks for non-toxic lotions in a nutshell:

+ a lot more options for you below!

This guide contains product recommendations and we may receive compensation if you purchase through certain links. Some of the products were gifted and others I purchased full-price. All of the prices were accurate at the time of publication, but be sure to check the brands’ websites for the most updated info. As always, we only make recommendations that are genuine.

Best Non-Toxic & Natural Body Lotions, Balms, Butters, Oils, & Serums

Btw, if you want to read more about which ingredients to avoid and why, check out this article.

Toups & Co. Tallow Balms (uber moisturizing)

I won’t lie to you: I was late getting on the tallow train. I’m not vegan, but somehow the idea of putting beef tallow on my skin weirded me out.

But let me tell you: after using Toups & Co’s tallow balms—I get it.

These balms make my skin feel SO. GOOD. They are so luscious and moisturizing that I still notice a difference in the way my skin feels like 24 hours later.

They have several different options:

  • Original (this one has a mix of few different essential oils for scent)
  • Unscented
  • Vanilla + Almond
  • Sweet Girl (it’s got a floral-y scent)
  • Frankincense Face Balm*
  • Baby Balm**
  • Sun Balm (it contains 20% non-nano zinc-oxide for sun protection)
  • Limited edition holiday Mistletoe Balm (I love this would and will totally buy it again next holiday season if they offer it).

You can also get a Mini Balm Set if you want to try a few different options without committing to buying a whole jar!

*Even though I love these balms, I still will not be putting any of them on my face. They’re too greasy and I just don’t trust that they won’t lead to breakouts. They say it’s bioidentical and won’t clog pores! But I’m just so picky about the textures I put on my face.

**I would honestly just use the Unscented on babies instead of the Baby Balm. I think it’s generally better to just skip the essential oils for babies and go with fragrance-free when you can.

Price: From $32

The scents: All of the scented options are really nice. I think they found a nice balance of something that smells good, but it’s overpowering in any way.

The ingredients: All of these balms contain very minimal ingredients. They’re made with 100% grass-fed tallow, certified organic virgin olive oil, and then whatever essential oils are used for the specific variety.

Every one of them is all-natural and made by hand in small batches in Alabama.

The texture: They have a whipped texture, so it’s lightweight but suuuuper nourishing at the same time. The balm goes on so smooth, but be aware that they are on the greasier side. I always use these at nighttime.

The packaging: The full-sized balms come in plastic-free jars (glass with aluminum lids). The Mini Balm Set comes in small plastic containers.

Would I re-buy it? Yes, I already have actually.

Plaine Products Body Lotion (plastic-free/refillable)

This clean body lotion has my husband’s full approval. (He is picky about lotion textures. He likes something lightweight and prefers something with a stronger smell.)

Price: $8 (travel size) – $33 (16oz)

The ingredients: This has got ingredients like organic aloe to soothe and soften the skin, rosa canina fruit oil for protective & anti-aging antioxidants, and camelilla sinensis leaf extrac, which contains vitamin E and polyphenols.

There’s nothing in this formulation that is concerning to me at all.

The texture: This is a great morning/daytime lotion. You’ve not only got the energizing scent, but it’s also not greasy at all. It’s light and soaks in easily so you can get dressed and get on with your day.

The smell: I love the Rosemary Mint Vanilla scent. It’s so refreshing!

In addition to that, they also have a Citrus Lavender scent (which I also really like) and Unscented.

The packaging: It’s low-plastic (and single-use-plastic-free). It comes in a refillable aluminum container with a plastic pump that you can re-use on your new bottle. This low-plastic, refillable aspect makes Plaine Products one of my favorite personal care brands.

Will I re-buy it? Yes. I like to have at least two lotion options lying around: one that’s lightweight and non-greasy, and one that’s more of a thicker, deep skin-conditioner. This Plaine Products one is my go-to lightweight one.

Here’s my full Plaine Products review. (They are actually local to me and the owners are so nice.)

OSEA Undaria Algae Body Butter (best smelling 🤤)

A person holding the OSEA Undaria Algae Body Butter

This might be my favorite OSEA product. It saved my skin in last winter’s dryness.

Price: $26 (travel size) – $54 (full-size)

The texture: It is luscious and super moisturizing, but it also soaks in pretty quickly compared to other thick butters. (So you can put it on before getting dressed without having to worry about feeling greasy.)

The scent: Some of OSEA’s products contain undisclosed “natural fragrance,” and this is one of them. It’s kind of annoying because I think consumers deserve to know what’s in the products they buy and I don’t like it when brands hide ingredients. But as I’ve said before, it’s all-natural, so it’s not as concerning. (And I also just generally trust OSEA as a brand—I’ve been using their products for so long.)

If you have any specific sensitivities to natural fragrances, definitely reach out to them and ask. In my experience, their customer service has always been helpful.

That being said… I am pretty sensitive to strong fragrances and I actually love the scent of this body butter. It’s pleasant, but light enough that it doesn’t bother me. Honestly, it’s nice to be able to enjoy a scented product!

The ingredients: Other than the ‘natural fragrance,’ there’s nothing else concerning in this formulation.

It’s got nourishing ingredients like undaria seaweed, which contains amino acids and antioxidants, shea butter, ceramides, and more.

The packaging: It comes in a glass jar with a plastic lid.

Also, all of OSEA’s products are vegan and cruelty-free.

Would I re-buy it? Yes. Despite the fact that I realllyyyy wish they would fully disclose their fragrance ingredients, I would make an exception and re-buy this body butter. That’s how much I like it!

Primally Pure Body Butters (for a mostly organic option)

This natural body butter is another winner for me in terms how it makes my skin feel.

They have several different scents, including:

  • Almond + Vanilla
  • Eucalyptus + Lavender
  • Citrus + Mint
  • Bergamot + Eucalyptus (I think this one is more targeted toward the guys!)
  • Limited edition holiday scent

Price: $30

The ingredients: MOST of the ingredients they use are organic, including the tallow, coconut oil, mango butter, shea butter, and more. They’ve included ingredients that help with skin inflammation, moisturization, and microbiome balancing.

Their formulations include minimal ingredients and there’s nothing concerning in there for me. (Obviously skip if you’re vegan though.)

The texture: Soooo smoooooth.

These are definitely on the heavier side, so I opt to use them at nighttime. But they just feel so nice and luxurious and leave my skin feeling so soft.

The smell: All of the scents I’ve tried are honestly really nice. They’re refreshing and definitely make for a nice little post-shower ritual experience, but they’re not overpowering at all.

So far, I’ve only tried the first three listed above, but I think out of those, my favorite is the Eucalyptus + Lavender.

The packaging: Glass jars with plastic lids.

Would I re-buy it? Totally.

Earth Mama Simply Non-Scents Baby Lotion

The photo shows a hand holding an 8 fl. oz. white pump bottle of Earth Mama "Simply Non-Scents Baby Lotion" against a neutral, plain wall.

I may not be a baby, but I can pamper myself like one if I want to!

In all seriousness though, this is one of the best clean body lotions (no iffy ingredients at all), and I do like it. It’d be a great option to have around for everyone in the family, especially if multiple people in your household have sensitive skin.

Price: $15.99

The ingredients: This formulation includes a number of skin-soothers, like aloe vera, shea butter, and olive oil. Not all of the ingredients are organic, but many of them are.

Its ingredients have multiple third-party certifications, including Oregon Tilth organic and Leaping Bunny cruelty-free. It’s also been Awarded the Seal of Acceptance™ by the National Eczema Association.

The texture: I really like this one because it’s light enough that I can put it on in the morning/daytime, but it’s also thick enough that it doesn’t feel like I’m just putting water on my skin. (You know those lotions!) It moisturizes really well, but I can still put my clothes on right after applying it.

The smell: It’s fragrance-free. It does still have a very slight smell to it, which is just the natural smell of the ingredients. It’s not really a good or bad smell, to be honest. It doesn’t bother me at all.

(If you’d rather get one that’s scented though, they also have a Lavender version and a Sweet Orange version.)

The packaging: It comes in a plastic bottle, which is not ideal. I wish they had a refill option. I do like that it comes with a pump lid, though. That’s essential for parents who have to do a lot of things one-handed.

Would I re-buy it? Yep!

Hygiene Lab Men’s Body Lotion (for the guys)

The photo features a matte brown pump bottle and its white cardboard packaging for Hygiene Lab body lotion sitting on a speckled granite bathroom countertop.

I really like this lotion, actually. I find it to be a really good mix of being lightweight enough to wear during the day, while at the same time being effective enough to make my skin feel moisturized and soft.

Price: $36

The ingredients: Some of the key ingredients include aloe vera, squalane, and glycerin for moisturization.

There’s nothing super concerning in this formulation. The only potentially problematic one is carbomer, which can potentially be contaminated with benzene during contamination. It’s not something I’m super concerned about in the grand scheme of things.

It is EWG Verified.

The texture: I really like the overall texture. It’s lightweight enough to put on at any time of day and absorbs easily into my skin.

The smell: It’s fragrance-free!

The packaging: It comes in a plastic bottle with a pump lid.

Would I re-buy it? Yes, I would re-buy it, especially for my husband. However, I do wish they had low-plastic and/or refillable packaging. For this reason, I’m more likely to re-buy the Plaine Products lotion instead of this one for him. (The textures are comparable and they both come with the pump lid, which he likes.)

Everyone Nourishing Body Lotio (most affordable)

The photo shows a large 32 fl oz amber pump bottle of Everyone "Nourishing Lotion" in Lavender + Aloe scent sitting on a white speckled bathroom countertop.

This one is not my favorite, but I’m including it here because it’s significantly more affordable than most of the other brands here. You can get a giant bottle for $15 that should last you a while.

It’s not the ‘cleanEST’ formulation in the world, but it’s pretty clean. So this would be a great alternative to that bottle of Nivea, Vaseline, or Jergens.

Price: $3.99 (2oz bottle) – $14.99 (32oz bottle)

The ingredients: There are three ingredients in this lotion that are ‘not-amazing-but-not-the-worst.’

  • dimethicone: this is a silicone, which a) can be pore-clogging, and b) is not biodegradable
  • phenoxyethanol: this is a preservative that can be contaminated with two toxicants (1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide) because of the way it’s contaminated.
  • benzyl alcohol: this is also a preservative that is fine for most people but can be irritating for those with sensitive skin.

These three ingredients are not super problematic in my opinion, but some people prefer to avoid or minimize them (especially in a product like lotion, where you’re probably putting a lot of it on).

Other than that, it’s got nourishing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and vitamin E.

It is EWG Verified, Leaping Bunny Cruelty-Free, and vegan.

The texture: It’s very light and fast-absorbing, making it a good option for any time of day. It’s not the most moisturizing lotion, but it’s also not going to leave you feeling greasy or weighed down.

(I’m also assuming this is one of the reasons why it contains those two preservatives—the formulation is heavy on the water.)

The scent: I tried the Lavender + Aloe scent, and it’s nice! It’s got a little relaxing aromatherapy action to it, which I appreciate if I’m putting it on in the middle of a work day or before bed.

The packaging: It comes a few sizes: 2oz, 8oz, or 32oz. They’re all plastic bottles (amber-colored for preservation) and the two larger sizes come with a hand pump. Everyone’s hand soap is available in a refill option, but the lotion is not, unfortunately.

Would I re-buy it? Only if I was on a really tight budget.

Attitude Body Cream

Attitude is a pretty good place to find a wide variety of home and body care products that are on the more affordable end. They have a lot of products to choose from, so you can get everything from laundry detergent and baby diapers to concealer and deodorant all in one place.

In terms of hand & body moisturizers, they have several different options, including body lotion, hand cream, squeeze-bottles, bottles with hand pumps, sensitive skin, unscented, plastic-free, and more.

Price: $13-$22

The ingredients: All of their lotions and creams are EWG Verified.

The texture: I really like the texture of this one because it’s lightweight and fast-absorbing, but it still does a good job of moisturizing. It’s not very thick.

The scent: I tried the Energizing Ginseng body cream, which they actually don’t have anymore. It’s nice, though—it’s very light.

They have several fragrance-free options as well.

Also, quick note about Attitudes fragrances: They starting listing “*Fragrance (Parfum)” on their labels because EWG has asked them to do so in order to differentiate between their fragrance ingredients and their functional ones (since they use essential oils and others for function as well). I find this annoying because it makes things more confusing to customers. But they say their formulations have not changed and that their fragrances are all natural.

The packaging: Most of their lotions are packaged in plastic bottles. At the time of this writing, the only plastic-free options they have are the Body Butter Pregnancy Bar, Stretch Mark Prevention Oil Bar, and Nursing Balm Bar.

They used to have more options, like the Dry Body Oil Bar pictured above. I really liked this option for travel and the gym because I could throw it in my bag without worrying about TSA or whether or not it would bust open make a mess.

Maybe they’ll bring it back in the future. (But in the meantime, let’s be honest: you could totally use the pregnancy lotion bars even if you’re not pregnant!)

Would I re-buy it? In general, yes.

Pipette Eczema Lotion

The photo displays an assortment of Pipette brand skincare products, including tubes of Baby Lotion, Relaxing Body Lotion, and Eczema Lotion, along with a jar of Baby Balm, arranged on a white speckled bathroom countertop.

As the name indicates, this one is specifically formulated for eczema. It comes with the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

Even though Pipette is technically a baby/kid brand, this lotion would be great for anyone in the family, no matter their age.

Price: $14.99

The ingredients: The three key ingredients they use for eczema treatment are:

  • ceramide NP (which is also naturally found in the skin and helps with hydration)
  • sugarcane-derived squalene (which basically mimics the skin’s natural squelene later and helps build a protective layer)
  • colloidal oatmeal (which can be very effective in soothing itchy and irritated skin)

Everything else is safe and there are no potentially problematic ingredients for me in this formulation. It not all-natural/organic though, if that matters to you.

The texture: I really like this one. It definitely has a very smooth feel to it and it moisturizes well. But it is also light enough that I can put it on at any time of day and it doesn’t feel greasy or heavy. (I actually keep this one on my desk at the moment to use as a hand lotion.)

The smell: The Eczema lotion only comes in a fragrance-free version. It does have a very slight smell to it (which just comes from the ingredients themselves), which I’d say reminds me a little bit of baby lotion.

If you do want a scented option, they have a Baby Lotion that comes in Vanilla + Ylang Ylang or Sweet Wildflower. Those ones, however, do not have colloidal oatmeal in them.

I have the Vanilla + Ylang Ylang one and it does smell like baby lotion for sure. I do like the texture though. Again, it’s lightweight and soaks in well, but is still good at moisturizing.

I’ve also tried their Baby Balm, which is a good Vaseline alternative.

The packaging: It does come in a plastic tube, with no refillable options, which is not my favorite.

Would I re-buy it? Yes.

Acure Seriously Soothing 24hr Moisture Lotion

two hands holding acure's seriously soothing lotion with a bathroom counter in the background. One hand is squeezing some lotion out onto the other hand.

I would definitely describe this lotion as functional. There’s nothing luxurious about it or anything like that, but it gets the job done and it’s on the more affordable side compared to some of the other options.

The price: $14

The texture: It’s basically like your standard lotion from back in the day (Jergens or Aveeno or whatever). The good thing is that it’s lightweight, not greasy, and soaks in fast—so you can put it on in the morning and then get dressed without worrying about getting your clothes all oily.

The ingredients: It’s formulated with things like cocoa butter, oatmeal, and aloe to help soothe skin and lock in moisture. There are no concerning ingredients in this one!

The smell: It’s unscented, but it does have a slight scent to it (which I think might be the combination of coconut and oatmeal).

The packaging: It just comes in a regular plastic tube. They did have a lower plastic option, but it was a limited edition thing and I’m not sure if it’s coming back or not.

Overall, I’d recommend this as a great daily body lotion that you can use year-round.

OSEA Undaria Algae Body Oil

A hand holds a 5 fl oz frosted glass pump bottle of OSEA Undaria Algae Body Oil over a white bathroom sink.

Alright, so I already talked about OSEA’s Undaria Algae Body Butter, which is my favorite of OSEA’s body moisturizers. But I’ve tried several of their other options as well…

Price: $16 (travel size) – $84 (jumbo)

The texture: I like to put this natural body oil on after the shower. Even though it is an oil (so there’s naturally a certain amount of grease involved), it’s overall pretty lightweight. It doesn’t feel super greasy and it absorbs relatively quickly.

Like a lot of the other products, it uses ingredients that are meant to help skin appear firmer and smoother. The undaria seaweed is meant to replenishes your skin’s moisture barrier, and white lupin flower helps to improve your skin’s elasticity.

The ingredients: This is another one that does contain undisclosed fragrance. As I said with the body butter, all of their fragrance ingredients are natural and they don’t use any synthetics. But I still with they would list them all out!

There are no other potentially-concerning ingredients. All of the ingredients in this are natural.

The scent: It does smell really good. It’s kind of hard to describe, but to me it’s their ‘signature’ OSEA smell. They say it as notes of grapefruit, lime, cypress, mango, and mandarin.

The packaging: It comes in a glass bottle with a plastic pump lid.

Would I re-buy it? Maybe. But I’d probably buy the body butter first.

Use code THEFILTERY10 for 10% off.

OSEA Undaria Algae Body Lotion

OSEA Undaria Algae Body Lotion bottle with pump dispenser placed on a granite bathroom counter beside its box.

Price: $18 (travel size) – $48 (standard)

The texture: This lotion is very similar to the body butter and body oil, but in a much lighter form. It’s not a thick lotion; it’s actually a bit watery. So out of the three of them, this one is the best for putting on in the morning or just when you don’t want to feel greasy at all.

The scent: The scent is the same as the body butter and body oil as well, although it seems like it’s not quite as strong as the other two. (And like the others, it does contain undisclosed ‘natural fragrance.’)

The ingredients: In addition to the undaria seaweed, this lotion also has a few ingredients that the butter and oil do not—like hyaluronic acid (good for anti-aging) and turmeric (which is good for anti-inflammation and skin brightness).

This also has their signature ‘natural fragrance’ that I talked about in the butter and oil.

The packaging: It comes in a glass bottle with a pump lid.

Would I re-buy it? Again, I would probably just go with the butter instead. But if you love OSEA and their scents, you’d like this one for a lightweight, daytime lotion.

Use code THEFILTERY10 for 10% off.

Hyaluronic Body Serum & Dream Bio-Retinol Body Serum

Price: $22-$52

First, the Hyaluronic Body Serum:

I do love how this serum feels. I definitely noticed a difference in how my skin felt the first time I used it. Hours after I put it on, my skin was noticeably softer than usual.

It’s “powered by 5 molecular weights of hyaluronic acid,” which helps with hydrating the skin and also helps with anti-aging to make skin look plumper and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

The texture has a bit of a ‘gel-like’ feel to it, but it’s lightweight and dries pretty quickly. So, you can put it on after your morning shower and not worry about it getting your clothes oily or anything like that. They say you can layer it with an actual lotion, but I personally just use it as a lotion replacement.

It’s fragrance-free and really doesn’t smell like much at all. The only ingredient I don’t love is Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer. This is a common ingredient used in skincare, but it’s one of those weird borderline ingredients that may or may not qualify as a type of microplastic.

Now for the Dream Bio-Retinol Body Serum:

This one contains lavender and magnesium, both of which can help with relaxation and restfulness. (One of my friends swears by magnesium lotion for sleep.)

It also has other ingredients that help with overall skin health and anti-aging like bioretinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, king of bitters and more.

Like the Hyaluronic Body Serum above, this one also makes my skin feel so soft. But unlike the Hyaluronic Body Serum, this one does not contain “Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer.” So if I were going to buy a body serum from OSEA, I would buy this Dream one instead.

They do contain ‘natural fragrance.’

The packaging: They both come in glass bottles with plastic lids.

Would I re-buy it? I probably wouldn’t re-buy green body serum until I can find out for sure whether or not Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer is a microplastic. I would just buy the Dream Body Serum instead.

Use code THEFILTERY10 for 10% off.

OSEA Anti-Aging Body Balm

A person holding the OSEA Anti-Aging Body Balm near the sink in the bathroom

Price: $20 (travel size) – $84 (jumbo)

The texture: This one definitely has a very luxurious vibe to it. It’s like a cross between a lotion and a serum. I would put it in the ‘midweight’ category—it’s not very thick but it’s not super lightweight either. I prefer to use it in the evenings because it does feel a little greasy after putting it on.

The ingredients: The two “star” ingredients they use for the anti-aging benefits are alaria esculenta seaweed, which they say helps to improve elasticity and firmness, and passion fruit seed oil, which they say helps the skin to hold more water for a more youthful-looking appearance. I definitely like the way it makes my skin feel!

The scent: It’s light but it does have a pleasant scent to it. It’s kind of citrus-y. It does contain ‘natural fragrance.’

The packaging: Like most of OSEA’s products, this one also comes in a glass bottle with a plastic lid.

Would I re-buy it? Maybe. The butter is still my favorite though.

Use code THEFILTERY10 for 10% off.

DIME’s “The Glaze” Body Oil

This is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a lightweight and hydrating body oil.

Overall, I like this product. I do think it hydrates my skin well and leaves it feeling moisturized for hours later, but without weighing it down.

Price: $44

The ingredients: It contains a lot of different antioxidant-rich plant-based oils that are good for combatting inflammation, including apricot, argan, rosehip, almond, and jojoba.

This does contain dimethicone, which is not a huge problem but is not the ‘cleanest’ ingredient in the world either. Everything else is good.

The texture: It’s slightly greasy (as all of these body oils are), but it’s really not bad. It soaks inp pretty well and you could definitely use this one morning or night.

The smell: It has a light, uplifting scent to it, but it’s subtle. Not overpowering at all for the fragrance-sensitive folks! (It’s scented with plant extracts.)

The packaging: It comes in a glass bottle with a plastic pump on top.

Would I re-buy it? Hmm… tough to say. It’s not that I don’t like it, but I there are other body moisturizers that I like more.

Code THEFILTERY will get you 20% off.

DIME Biome Body Butter

Open jar of DIME Biome Body Butter on a granite bathroom counter, with the product box behind it.

This is a “Biome” butter because it contains lactococcus ferment lysate (a probiotic), which is meant to help promote a healthy skin microbiome. I’m not entirely sure throwing probiotics into products like this is actually helping in the way we want it to, but I am definitely glad that we’re paying more attention to our microbiomes these days—not just our gut but also our mouth, skin, etc.

Price: $44

The ingredients: In addition to the probiotics, this contains nourishing ingredients like shea butter and vitamins A and E.

But unfortunately, there are a few ingredients here that I don’t love. There’s polyacrylamide crosspolymer-6, which which is a synthetic polymer (liquid plastic). And then there’s dimethicone, phenoxyethanol, and carbomer, all of which come with potential contamination concerns from manufacturing. These are definitely not the worst ingredients by any means, but they’re not the best either.

The texture: I’d say this is a ‘mid-weight’ body butter. It’s thicker than your typical lotion, but not as thick as some of your body butters. Because of this, I think it could make a great option for morning or evening! It absorbs pretty well and is not very greasy, especially for something that’s so moisturizing.

It has a super smooth texture, for sure.

The smell: It’s very light scent. You can smell hints of the shea butter, along with something slightly citrusy. But it’s almost unscented.

The packaging: It comes in a glass jar (with a plastic lid). It gives it a semi-luxe but also minimalistic vibe.

Would I rebuy it? Not likely. I do like it from a user perspective, but it contains those few ingredients that I don’t love, so if I was going to buy a new body butter, I would go with a cleaner option.

That said, those ingredients are not so concerning that I won’t use up what I have already!

Code THEFILTERY will get you 20% off.
