My Honest Review of Primally Pure’s Natural Skincare

With a recent rising interest in topics like tallow skincare and how to make sourdough starter, it’s no secret that many of us are craving simplicity.

While most big-box stores are lined with hundreds of fluorescent-backlit beauty products made from ingredients that are difficult to pronounce, there’s something refreshing about going back to basics. 

That’s one of the reasons why I was eager to try out Primally Pure. It’s a skincare & personal care company that prioritizes down-to-earth ingredients that are both clean and effective.

My Experience Using Primally Pure’s Non-Toxic Skincare

Primally Pure defines their brand as “mindfully made skincare.” And with that goal in mind, they carefully craft formulas made from safe, natural ingredients. 

Employing ancient wisdom using both plant and animal-based products, they emphasize ancestral and traditional practices in their unique approach to skincare.

I tried a handful of Primally Pure products, and my general takeaway was extremely positive. Their products are effective, easy to use, and feel luxurious. Plus, I’m a sucker for pretty design and packaging, and I love the way they look on my bathroom counter!

Primally Pure Skincare: My Honest Review 

I tried several of Primally Pure’s skincare essentials. Here are my thoughts on each of them (spoiler alert: their products have totally won me over). 

Almond + Vanilla Body Butter

Price: $32

Primally Pure’s Almond + Vanilla Body Butter is made using a nutrient-rich blend of natural ingredients like tallow from grass-fed cows, shea butter, mango butter, and almond extract to support softer, more hydrated skin. This nourishing formula is packed with vitamins to improve the moisture barrier and protect the skin with its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

My take: I have very dry skin, so as soon as the temperature starts to drop, I make sure my skincare arsenal is lined up and ready to go with the most nourishing body lotions that I can get my hands on (if you have dry skin, you understand the struggle). 

This year, this body butter is my first line of defense. It’s rich, extremely hydrating, and smells amazing. The almond and vanilla scent is sweet and light, but not too intense. You only need a small amount since the texture is so thick, which is a bonus. 

Would I re-buy it? 100% I would re-buy this body butter. I love the texture, hydration, and scent. All around, this moisturizer is a win.

Blue Tansy Deodorant

Price: $16

Made specifically for sensitive skin, this natural deodorant reduces B.O., detoxifies, and soothes underarms using vitamin-rich and anti-inflammatory ingredients like grass-fed tallow, coconut oil, beeswax, and blue tansy oil. This gentle formula minimizes toxic buildup to actively improve the skin and prevent irritation while fighting against body odor.

My take: Natural deodorants have always been a struggle for me. I’ve tried so many of the brands that the non-toxic community raves about, only to find that by the end of the day, either my clothes are stained or I need a shower (anybody else?). 

I was pleasantly surprised when I found that this deodorant is both natural and effective. Don’t let the initial application scare you— it goes on feeling a little wet and leaves a blue-ish tint. However, the blue color immediately fades, and it dries quickly. 

I used this deodorant all summer in North Carolina, and I felt clean and protected every day. (It even got me through some pretty intense hot yoga and pilates classes, which is more than I can say for some other deodorants that do have aluminum!) If you’re a natural deodorant skeptic, I would definitely recommend giving this one a try. 

Would I re-buy it? This is actually the only natural deodorant I’ve tried so far that I would repurchase. If you’re like me and finding non-toxic deodorants that agree with your body chemistry is a struggle, don’t write them off until you’ve tried this one.

Cleansing Oil (Oily + Acne-Prone Skin)

Price: $24

Primally Pure’s cleansing oil for oily and acne-prone skin uses a nutrient-rich blend of organic, cold-pressed oils that imitate the skin’s composition to detoxify, unclog pores, and support a healthy moisture barrier. Formulated with castor oil, tamanu oil, baobab oil, and orange essential oil, this cleanser dissolves buildup and dirt without overdrying the skin for a healthier, calmer complexion. 

Although this cleanser is formulated for oily and acne-prone skin, Primally Pure also offers cleansing oils for dry and normal skin types. 

My take: I recently started double-cleansing, and I’ll never go back. (I will say that I like cleansing balms better than cleansing oils, but that’s just my personal preference. As far as cleansing oils go, this formula thoroughly removes makeup and dirt, and I feel like it really gets in there for a good clean. 

It also provides deep hydration while cleansing, which is perfect for thirsty skin like mine. (Even though this formula is technically for oily skin, I do have acne-prone skin, so I opted for this one over the dry skin formula.) 

This cleansing oil leaves my skin feeling soft and clean, and I love the subtle, calming scent of lavender. If you crave the extra deep-clean feeling and are looking to add double-cleansing to your routine, this oil is a great option. 

Would I re-buy it? I wouldn’t re-buy this oil cleanser—but only because I prefer cleansing balms. That being said, this is still an amazing product, and if you like liquid oil cleansers best, then this product is worth the money.

Natural Lip Balm

Price: $6

Primally Pure’s creamy lip balm is chock-full of antioxidants and fatty acids to promote deep nourishment and healing at a cellular level. Made with beeswax, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and mango butter, this lip balm offers anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral benefits for long-lasting hydration and instant relief for dry, cracked lips. It can also be used to calm irritation around the eyes or for any extra dry patches. 

My take: Having a reliable lip balm for on-the-go is essential if you’re susceptible to chapped lips. I tried this lip balm in the lavender, grapefruit, and peppermint scents, and I love them all. 

I appreciate that these lip balms provide long-lasting moisture and don’t need to be constantly reapplied. The formula is buttery, nourishing, and glides on easily. My favorite is the peppermint, and I want to try the orange creamsicle next!

Would I re-buy it? I plan to re-purchase this lip balm for myself and my friends (this would make a great stocking stuffer!). Not only is this lip balm hydrating, you can’t beat the price.

Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair

Price: $18

Primally Pure’s dark dry shampoo adds texture and volume while absorbing oil for an instant refresh. Made with arrowroot powder, cocoa powder, kaolin clay, and essential oils, this dry shampoo is anti-inflammatory and boosts hair growth for instantly healthier, cleaner locks. (If you don’t have dark hair, check out their dry shampoo for light hair instead.)

My take: I have curly/wavy hair that’s on the drier side, so I typically only wash my hair 1-2 days per week. Needless to say, dry shampoo is an essential in my routine for the in-between days, and this dry shampoo is a win.

I tried the dark hair formula, which I love because it blends so easily into my natural color. It smells nice (like cocoa), and makes a big difference in how clean my hair looks and feels. 

My only qualm with this product is that since it’s a true powder formula instead of a spray bottle, the application can get a bit messy. However, since aerosol spray bottles typically use harmful gasses as propellants, it’s a sacrifice worth making in my opinion. (Plus, the powder is easy to wipe off if you experience fallout, so I don’t think it’s much of a con!) 

Would I re-buy it? I will be re-purchasing this product when I run out. If you’re a dry shampoo lover like me, this natural option gets the job done perfectly.

Everything Spray

Price: $24

The Everything Spray’s multi-purpose formula hydrates, heals, and detoxifies the skin with its antibacterial blend of magnesium, apple cider vinegar, and aloe vera. This soothing spray combats irritation, reduces inflammation, disinfects, deodorizes, tones, and balances the skin. The Everything Spray can be used as a toner, underarm refresher, post-shave spray, after-sun spray, or even to heal wounds and target acne. 

My take: I love how multi-faceted this spray is. I’ve been spraying it onto a cotton pad and applying it as a toner, and also directly onto my skin post-shave to prevent ingrown hairs. 

It’s calming and refreshing with a clean lavender and tea tree scent. I’ve noticed way less inflammation after shaving, and my skin always feels calmer after using it as a toner. If you struggle with razor bumps or irritated skin, this spray is a game-changer.

Would I re-buy it? I would definitely re-buy this spray. It’s perfect to stick in my travel bag since it has so many uses. (Plus, it has really made a difference in my post-shaving routine.)

My Pros & Cons (in a nutshell!)

Pros:

• 100% natural ingredients (zero synthetics)
• Effective for a variety of skin types, including sensitive, oily, dry, and acne-prone
• Gender-neutral aesthetic, making it great for men too
• Pleasant, light scents in most products
• Sustainable sourcing from regenerative farms
• You can tell it’s high-quality and has a bit of a *luxury* feel to it
• The branding/packaging looks nice!

Cons:

• Not vegan
• Pricey for some products
• They still use quite a bit of plastic packaging (though some of it is aluminum & glass)
• Contains colloidal silver, which some avoid (only in the Clarifying Face Mask)

Primally Pure Ingredient Standards 

Primally Pure uses non-toxic ingredients that are thoughtfully selected to directly benefit the skin. Their animal-based ingredients are sourced from regenerative farms that support and foster biodiversity.

Primally Pure’s ingredient glossary lists all of the ingredients that they use. Everything they use is natural—there’s no artificial anything!

Are There Any Primally Pure Ingredients That Raise Red Flags?

In short, Primally Pure doesn’t use any ingredients that are super concerning.

However, there are a few potential allergens in some of their formulas. Although these ingredients aren’t linked to serious health concerns, they can cause adverse reactions for people with sensitive skin:

• Essential oils like bay laurel, rosemary, spearmint, and lemon 
• Menthol

Again, these aren’t problematic for most people, but if you’re extra prone to skin sensitivities or reactions to allergens, these essential oils could potentially be irritating. (I always recommend a patch test before putting anything on your face, just to be safe!)

It’s also worth noting that Primally Pure uses colloidal silver in their Clarifying Face Mask. Again, this isn’t a super problematic ingredient, but there is reason to be mindful about how much we use it. (Members can get a full break-down on colloidal silver here.)

Although Primally Pure has a vegan collection, most of their products use animal-based ingredients. For our vegan readers, I would suggest trying a different non-toxic brand like DIME instead.

Which Ingredients Should You Avoid In Skincare? 

While we’re on the topic of Primally Pure and their ingredient standards, here’s a quick list of potentially toxic chemicals that are frequently used by big-name brands in skincare. You’ll want to avoid these if possible:

• Butylated Compounds
• Formaldehyde Releasers (Formaldehyde itself is less common in personal care products nowadays, but formaldehyde releasers are often used as preservatives. These include chemicals like quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, or bromopol.)
• Parabens
• PEGs (and other “ethoxylated” ingredients) 
• Resorcinol
• Undisclosed Fragrance (which can include phthalates)
• Sulfates (if you have sensitive skin)
